Luxury Leisure Suite Technology

A spectacular leisure suite extension was the inspiration for a complete overhaul and redesign of a lacklustre existing system.

As part of this impressive leisure suite extension, SONA were asked to design a home technology installation to provide lighting, distributed audio video and an integrated control system, and as part of our design, we were also asked to look at incorporating the existing house into this new system so that it too could benefit from a new audio system, high definition video, data network and iPad control system.

We designed a comprehensive cable infrastructure system for the new extension, with all cables presented through our cable termination panel.  This method allows independent installation of the cabling whilst the main equipment rack can be configured off site.
In addition to new cabling for the leisure suite, we also had to incorporate links to the existing house in order for the network, audio, video and control signals to be distributed through the existing cabling from the new system.

Lighting control is provided by a Lutron Homeworks system, and provides seamless operation of multiple lighting circuits including feature wall and pendant lights, dimmable LED coffer lighting and colour change lighting in the swimming, spa and plunge pools.
The lighting control system is also integrated with magnetic door locks, the steam generator, sauna and motorised blinds to provide control of these devices directly from the lighting keypads.

A wired and wireless data network supports all of the clients existing devices and provides connectivity for the integrated technology installation.  Fibre broadband is available throughout the entire property and the client can also choose to activate a web content filter system which can restrict access to sensitive websites for younger children.
A guest wireless network provides simple Internet access for visitors whilst shielding the main network.

As the existing house already featured a SONOS music system, with which the client was familiar with and wanted to retain, we installed additional equipment to expand this system to a total of twelve individual audio zones.  The SONOS system allows intuitive and simple access to a world of music content through a Spotify subscription and rooms can be dynamically linked together for entertaining at the touch of a button.

The ability for users throughout the home to enjoy a wide range of video sources was a key requirement at the specification stage.  Our final design gives members of the family access to four Sky+HD receivers, two Apple TV’s, a Blu-Ray player and viewing of the CCTV system in seven independent high definition zones.
This system includes new Samsung LED televisions ranging in size from 40 to 65″ and also makes use of some of the clients existing televisions, which had to be reinstalled to support the video distribution system.

In the main lounge and bar area, the client requested a high performance surround system, which had to blend in with the carefully considered interior scheme and remain as discrete as possible.  Our eventual solution used on-wall speakers, which we recessed into the bespoke timber panelling.  The speakers and subwoofer sit flush in the panels and the grilles have been colour matched to the aluminium wax finish.

With such a variety of systems and equipment to control – a single, intuitive interface was required to bridge the gap between the user and the technology.  Custom programmed iPads in each area provide one-touch operation of the system.  The iPads provide control over the lighting system, direct viewing of CCTV cameras within the app and additional features such as the local weather forecast and the security system status.
